Description
Smallhythe Place, Tenterden
The village of Smallhythe, near the picturesque town of Tenterden in south Kent, was once a small port on a tributary of the river Rother and the 15th century Smallhythe Place is thought to have been the harbourmaster’s house. This navigable waterway, however, has long since gone and is now no more than a tiny stream at the end of the garden. The actress Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) lived in the house for the last 30 years of her life and today the building provides a charming museum of her costumes and general theatrical memorabilia. There is also a small and very exclusive barn theatre in the grounds.
