Description

St John the Baptist

Wittersham is the only village wholly on the Isle of Oxney, an island that once had a working port and a ship building industry courtesy of its deep tidal waters. But these receded long ago and the island, now landlocked, overlooks the vast expanse of Romney Marsh which was once beneath the sea.

The parish church, St John the Baptist, is an imposing building, built of sandstone with kentish ragstone quoins (masonry blocks at the corner of each wall). Although the main part of the church was constructed in the 13th century, the tower, its most striking feature, was not completed for another 300 years.
